With the symposium Thinking about cinema through childhood and of childhood through cinema, taking place the 5-6th april 2018 in Paris, we wish to discuss movies, as well as the cinephile, theoretical and poetic discourses on childhood and cinema. How did films and discourses stage, represent and reflect on the relation between childhood and cinema? What are their historical, cultural and ideological contexts? How does cinema help us to think about childhood, and how does childhood help us to think about cinema? Does the child (as a figure, an actor and a spectator) still allow us to think about cinema today or to support a specific approach in the policies of film education? Or should we reformulate the relation of childhood and cinema, when facing the scientific historisation of childhood and considering the post-internet child of the 21st century?

This symposium succeeds and complements a symposium on childhood and cinema organised in Bremen in 2016 (International Bremen Film Conference). The first event, organized by Bremen University in cooperation with Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3, took the discourses mentioned above as a starting point in order to ask more general questions on the aesthetics and mediality of childhood in film, focusing on the figure of the child and the child actor, the creative process and spectator’s experience (see  "Childhood, Cinema and Film Aesthetics", forthcoming). The present symposium, organized by Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3, in cooperation with Bremen University, wishes to target a research on the history and the functioning of these discourses, and to think about their value for a contemporary reflection of the relation of cinema and childhood.
